Don’t think you need lock down software think again. Your Local Management Software controls all activities that the user of the kiosk sees while keeping the computer safe from hackers and unwanted use of the kiosks. Without this software a user could come up click on START and do what ever they want to on your system: restart it, shut it down, edit your registry files, or format your hard drive. To prevent this Advanced Kiosks puts Lock Down software on every system we make. The lock down software creates a highly customizable user interface using HTML skin technology. Manipulation of any files or settings is not allowed. The software also provides URL limiting and surf restriction, preventing access to unauthorized Web sites. The Lock-Down features include at a minimum the following Design and Security Features:
Lock Down or Local Administration Software
Ok you want your kiosk to interface with customers and at the end the conversation with the customer inputs their: name, phone #, and maybe e-mail address. Later you can have a list of leads on the kiosk that you can retrieve or be emailed to your computer from the kiosk. Collection of data is when you start getting into databases.
This is complicated but the cost impact is not as bad as you may think. The reason this gets complicated is that rather than only one program running, (the interface is one program) several programs will now have to communicate and exchanges the data to record the information into a file.
Data Collection, Databases and Servers
Remote administration allows convenient monitoring and control of kiosk operation without interfering with client usage. This software provides connectivity from a central site/server to all kiosks simultaneously. It provides kiosk status, file transfer, and remote control capability and auto starts at each system reboot. Each kiosk is configured to automatically connect to your central site/server and access is password protected.
An example of using a server with a number of kiosks is a customer who has 40 kiosks in the field in several states. Each of these kiosks has an interface, lock down software and is collecting customer names, phone #’s and email address. The server has been programmed to collect this information and supply a daily report of: kiosk status, number of times used that day, average length of time a customer used the kiosk, what pages and programs the user used, to name some of the information that is reported from each computer.
The server is also used to make updates to each kiosk over the internet. Since these kiosks are in several states they have been placed into families so that each family receives different updates from the server. For this project if a kiosk did not get an update every week the kiosk would try to connect with the server for 3 days after which the kiosk would automatically shut itself down.
